Character Sketches

These character sketches were from very early preliminary discussions; very little of this work ended up in the final game, but we’re hosting them here for historical purposes. No record exists of who did these sketches, so please forgive us for not giving credit where credit is due. Do note that the initial sketches of the gargoyle race did directly affect Niko’s work when he created them in 3D.

Collectible Cards

Avatar MaleThese “collectible cards” were released early in the development process, before much was known about the Dungeon Siege game engine. Included in these cards are concept sketches for several rejected ideas, such as Dwarves, female Gargoyles, and Orcs (which were in many other Ultimas, but not in the original Ultima VI). This series of cards will remain unfinished.

Maps

Many of these sketches directly translated into in-game layouts that make up the world of Britannia. Note the “Wayward Avatar” – a nod to the original forum where our team members used to meet and swap ideas. Originally, the “Wayward Avatar” was to be a meeting place where you could receive side quests and explore hidden areas of the realm. This was removed in favor of the Adventurer’s Guild, but the full concept was never implemented. These sketches are interesting for historical and for game design purposes.
